Our journey

We founded Portman-Gonçalves, S.A. in 1979, in São Torcato, Guimarães, in the heart of a region with a great tradition in footwear manufacturing. We started with around 70 employees and a daily production of 800 pairs, specializing in moccasins, which quickly became our calling card.

From the beginning, we focused on quality materials, technical rigor and excellent service. It was this dedication that allowed us, in the first few years, to gain the trust of international brands such as Rockport, Clarks, Ellesse, Lacoste, Van Lier, Seaside (Sweden), Bugatti (Astor Muller), Geox, among others. And it was also during this phase that a very special partnership was born with the TBS brand, which has been with us to this day — a relationship of trust and mutual growth that we are very proud of.

Over the course of these more than four decades, we have evolved, keeping up with technological advances and expanding our know-how.

Today, we have around 140 employees and the capacity to produce up to 1,400 pairs per day, covering various types of construction — assembled, mocassins, loafers, drivers, strobel, among others.

We continue to work with brands that value our experience, flexibility and commitment to quality. Our current clients include names such as Gant, Martinelli, Puraai, Manfield, Pavers, Vitaform, and of course, TBS, our long-time partner.

We believe that the key to our success lies in the union between tradition and innovation, in respecting those who work with us and in the trust that our partners place in us. More than just manufacturing footwear, we create lasting relationships, based on professionalism, passion and the constant desire to always do better.

Sustainability

Responsibility that can be felt

At Portman-Gonçalves, S.A., we believe that the footwear industry must evolve with environmental awareness and social responsibility. That is why we have been integrating sustainable practices into all phases of our production process — from the selection of raw materials to energy consumption and working conditions.
We use solar panels for part of our energy, promote efficiency in cutting and reducing waste, and prioritize ecological materials and suppliers who share the same values of environmental responsibility and ethics.
We are members of AMFORI, an international organization dedicated to responsible trade, which reinforces our commitment to fair working conditions, transparency in the supply chain and sustainable business practices.

For us, sustainability is also about people. We value interpersonal relationships within the company and promote an environment where everyone feels respected, integrated and motivated. We know that a large part of life happens in the workplace — and we make a point of cultivating a healthy, cooperative space where well-being is a priority.
Above all, our goal is clear: to continue to evolve, with our eyes on the environment and sustainability, actively contributing to a more balanced and conscious future — for the sector, for people and for future generations.
